Florida’s leading cause of preventable disease and death is smoking. 5 Changing behaviors related to tobacco is critical in Florida, where about 2.7 million adults still smoke. 6 If current smoking rates continue, 270,000 Florida children alive today who are younger than The Okaloosa County Tobacco-Free Partnership is a local group of community members dedicated to saving lives by reducing tobacco use. SWAT is Florida’s statewide youth organization working to mobilize, educate and equip Florida youth to revolt against and de-glamorize the tobacco industry. SWAT is a united movement of empowered youth working towards a tobacco free future. Anyone in Florida who is in 6th-12th grade is able to join SWAT. There is a SWAT Chapter in every county in Florida. Some counties also have clubs in schools and community centers. To join in the movement please contact Jonathan Avery at 850-699-4219
Adult Smoking Rates: According to the Florida Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the percentage of adults who are current smokers in Okaloosa County is collected every three years. Youth Smoking Rates: In 2020, 20.5% of Okaloosa County middle and high school students reported using cigarettes, cigars, electronic vapor products (e.g., JUUL, vapes), or hookah in the past 30 days. This is higher than the state average of 18.0%
Initiatives related to tobacco-free policies and programs in Okaloosa County: Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing (SFMUH), Point of Sale (POS), Cessation Access, Tobacco-Free Partnership, K-12 Tobacco-Free Schools, Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT), Tobacco-Free Public Places (TFPUB). The OCTFP is actively working to reduce tobacco use through education, advocacy, and collaboration with local partners.
