Quit Smoking & Tobacco Resources for Healthcare Providers

Patients who work with their healthcare providers are more successful in their attempts to quit tobacco. Every consultation is an opportunity for an intervention and cessation guidance.

If your patients want to quit, refer them to the Florida Department of Health’s Quit Your Way Program, which provides free and evidence-based tools and services. Your patients can access tools like a 2-Week Starter Kit of nicotine replacement patches, Text2Quit, Email Tips and a Quit Guide. They can choose as many as they need or use them in addition to Phone, Group and Web Quit services, which have already helped more than 212,000 Floridians successfully quit.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

There are nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), pharmaceuticals and other quit therapies that can help smokers deal with cravings and nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Using these products can double to triple a smoker’s chance of successfully quitting. Our Quit Your Way Program offers free NRT to Floridians, like the nicotine patch and nicotine gum, if medically appropriate and 18 years of age or older.

If you provide a prescription, those patients can still tap into our free tools and services for additional help.

Over-the-Counter Nicotine Replacement Therapy:

  • Nicotine Patches placed on the skin, give users a small and steady amount of nicotine.
  • Nicotine Gum is chewed until it produces a tingling feeling, then it’s placed between the cheek and gums to release nicotine.
  • Nicotine Lozenges look like hard candies that release nicotine as they slowly dissolve in your mouth.

Prescription-Only Nicotine Replacement Therapy:

  • Nicotine Inhaler is a cartridge attached to a mouthpiece. Inhaling through the mouthpiece gives the user a specific amount of nicotine.
  • Nicotine Nasal Spray is a pump bottle containing nicotine, which is placed into the nose and sprayed.

Other Prescription Medications:

  • Bupropion Also known as Zyban, helps to reduce nicotine withdrawal and the urge to smoke. Bupropion can be used safely with NRT.
  • Varenicline Also known as Chantix, helps to reduce nicotine withdrawal and the urge to smoke. It also blocks the effects of nicotine from cigarettes if the user starts smoking again.

All these medications are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. FDA approved means the product is proven safe and is proven to work. Always read the label and instructions. Only use as directed. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
